León to San Juan del Sur

León sits north-west of Managua and San Juan del Sur is well south of it, which makes this the longest of the routes travellers commonly do. It is a serious half-day on the road, and worth planning rather than improvising.

Be realistic about the distance

  • This is not a short hop. You are crossing most of the country, passing Managua on the way, and it takes the better part of a day however you do it.
  • By public bus it is a chain rather than a journey: León to Managua, across Managua, Managua to Rivas, Rivas to San Juan del Sur. Every link is a place to lose an hour.
  • A private car does it in one go. That is the entire argument for it on this route — not comfort, but not spending the day changing vehicles.
  • Leaving early matters more here than on any other route. Arriving into San Juan del Sur after dark with luggage is the version to avoid.

If you are coming off the volcano

  • Most people arrive in León for the volcanoes and leave straight afterwards, which means bags full of dust and sometimes a board.
  • Say what you are carrying when you book. Volcano boards, surfboards and several packs change which vehicle makes sense.
  • If you want a stop on the way — Managua, a proper lunch — say so at booking rather than on the day, so the driver has the time allowed for.

  • For a group this compares far better against the bus than people expect, because the bus cost is per person and the car is not.
