Granada to San Juan del Sur

Granada to San Juan del Sur is one of the most travelled routes in Nicaragua, and the one most people get wrong by assuming the bus is straightforward. Allow around two and a half to three hours by car.

The three ways of doing it

  • Private car, door to door. One leg, roughly two and a half to three hours, and you get dropped at your actual accommodation rather than near it.
  • Tourist shuttle. Cheaper, runs to a fixed timetable, and drops at set points. Good if your day matches the schedule.
  • Public bus. The cheapest by a wide margin and involves changing at Rivas, then a second leg into San Juan del Sur. Fine with a backpack, grim with a board bag or a suitcase.

What catches people out

  • The bus does not run Granada to San Juan del Sur directly. Almost everybody discovers the Rivas change on the day.
  • San Juan del Sur accommodation is spread up the hillside and out to the beaches. Arriving at the bus stop is not the same as arriving at your door, and the last stretch can be a proper climb.
  • Late arrivals are harder here than in Granada. There is less around after dark and fewer taxis waiting.
  • If you are carrying boards, confirm that before you book anything. It rules out some options entirely.
