How to get from Managua airport to San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is roughly 140 km south of Managua airport, near the Costa Rican border in the department of Rivas. Allow about two and a half hours by road. There is no train, and no domestic flight worth taking for that distance.

Delivery from C$184 in town and C$276 to the outer beaches. Every fee is agreed before we set off.

Your options, honestly compared

  • A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest: someone is waiting in arrivals and you are at your door in one leg. It costs the most and saves the most hassle, especially with luggage or after a long flight.
  • A shared shuttle is cheaper but runs to its own schedule and drops at set points, so a late or early flight may not line up with one.
  • The public bus route is by far the cheapest and involves changing at Rivas, then a second leg to San Juan del Sur. It is genuinely doable with light luggage and genuinely miserable with a board bag.
  • A taxi negotiated at the airport works, but you are agreeing a long-distance fare while tired, in a queue, with no way to compare.

Things worth knowing before you land

  • Arrivals is the meeting point for pre-booked drivers. If your phone will have no signal on landing, say so when you book so a meeting point can be agreed in advance.
  • The last stretch depends on where you are staying. A hotel in town is straightforward; a villa up a hill or a place out at Maderas is a different final twenty minutes and should be mentioned when you book.
  • Night arrivals cost more everywhere, for the ordinary reason that the driver is doing the whole run in the dark.

Booking it with Blink

  • Send us your flight number, how many passengers, how much luggage, and where you are staying. We reply with a fixed price before you fly.
  • The driver checks your flight before setting off, so a delay does not mean an empty arrivals hall.
  • Return trips can be booked at the same time, which usually works out better than two separate bookings.
  • We also run transfers from Liberia in Costa Rica, which is often the cheaper flight even counting the border crossing.
