Getting around San Juan del Sur without a car

Most visitors do not need a rental car here, and plenty of residents do not have one either. The town itself is walkable. The two things that catch people out are the beaches and the shopping.

Delivery from C$184 in town and C$276 to the outer beaches. Every fee is agreed before we set off.

The town is genuinely walkable

  • The bay, the restaurants and most places to stay are within a flat fifteen-minute walk of each other.
  • The exception is the hillside. Pelican Eyes, La Talanguera and the roads above the bay are a short distance and a real climb, which is fine going down and less fine coming back up with shopping.
  • After dark, streets away from the centre are not well lit. That is worth a taxi rather than a principle.

The beaches are the real gap

  • Maderas, Remanso and Marsella are not walkable. The roads out to them are rough in places and worse in the wet season.
  • Shuttles to the surf beaches exist and run on fixed timetables, which is fine if your day fits the timetable.
  • A private ride is the flexible option — you go when you want and come back when you want, which matters when the surf is good and the last shuttle is not.

What you would otherwise need a car for

  • The weekly shop. This is the big one — water bottles, gas, cases of drinks. Delivery replaces the car trip entirely.
  • Anything from Managua that will not fit in hand luggage: furniture, appliances, a package waiting at a shop.
  • Trips out of town — Rivas, the San Jorge ferry for Ometepe, Granada, the border. All of those are one-off journeys, which is exactly what you would not want to buy a car for.
  • Blink covers all three: deliveries around town and to the beaches, Managua pickups, and private transfers on the longer routes.
